For this assignment, I worked with my group members to figure out how to download and use Friendi.ca. Friendica is known as a "decentralized social network". This is an open source software for building, or adding on to a social network site The main focus of Friendica would be privacy settings and easy installation on personal servers. This is not run by a corporation; it is just a variety of volunteer developers to create this website.
Here is a list of pros we discussed about Friendica:
- "I like the name."- Benjamin
- People can connect using either a Friendica server or their other contacts from a variety of other social media platforms
- Most familiar social media aspects are available: Contact a group/single person by "@username"; direct messages; hashtags; albums; "likes"/"dislikes" and more.
- Users can also have a variety of profiles, allowing groups of people to have their own pages
Here is a list of cons we discussed about Friendica:
- They don't tell you how to set up the database.
- Need to have your own domain
- Takes forever to unzip the file
- Installation on shared hosting is potentially challenging because of missing PHP5 Modules
