MUSIC AND POLITICS

To finish requirements for a minor in Music (while completing my Information Science Major), I had to take another upper level course in the music department.
MUS 329 World Music and Politics was taught by Mr. Jon Shallit during 2018 Fall semester in SUNY Oswego. Due to schedule conflicts, I attended the 10:20 am – 11:15 class as oppose to enrolling another semester of Women’s College Choir (Spring ‘17, Fall ‘17, and Spring ‘18). I signed up for Mihoko Tsutsumi’s Oswego Festival Chorus during that semester. I was also taking a class with Dr. James Early the same mornings as Music and Politics.
Our concert assignment was the Korean band, Coreyah. I really enjoyed their music. I bought a CD and played in car a couple of times.
Our instructor, Mr. Shallit was also working a film project. He wrote, directed, cast, financed, and wrote the music for feature film SETESH, which was in post-production in 2018 and was to be shown at the VETFILMS fest in October.
Everyone had to write an essay and perform an oral report based off my paper. At the end, my report was on Calypso Music. This style of music was usually upbeat, even when a few pieces were written with bitter or hard lyrics. I was a happy that I did a practice performance, because I was the first student to be called up. I played a music clip from Harry Belafonte’s cover of the song, Cordelia Brown.
Below are my essays.
