2006

BLM Movement- The Black Lives Matter movement is a civil rights movement that began to assert political will of African Americans and protested against mistreatment and lack of social justice in various cases. It quickly became the largest protest campaign and modernized civil rights movement led by African Americans since the 1960’s.

2009

Oscar Grant (Fruitvale Station)- Fruitvale Station was the subway station that Oscar Grant, a 22 year old African American man was shot by police on New Year's morning of the year 2009. Police were called to the scene at 2 A.M that morning from reports of there being a fight on a train. Grant was innocent and not involved in the fight, however he was detained and punched in the face after trying to explain to the officer that he was not involved in the altercation. Grant was then detained and put on the ground, where moments later he was shot by one of the police officers. One year later, the officer who shot Grant claimed he was reaching for his taser and accidentally grabbed his gun instead. The officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, when it should’ve been second degree murder. This act of brutality and murder of an innocent man was caught on camera by bystanders in the station, and the trial was given national attention. In result, it spurred debates about racial profiling and police brutality and was adapted into a critically acclaimed film.
