1. "The ultimate smart machine is perhaps the human-like robot of science fiction stories, and the ultimate goal to create a genuinely intelligent machine."
2. "AI is a fascinating subject to study as it overlaps with so many different subject areas, and not just computer science."
3. "These include psychology, philosophy, and linguistics."
4. "Paradoxically, it turns out that it is the mundane tasks that are generally much the hardest to automate."
5. "Knowledge must be represented efficiently, and in a meaningful way."
6. "However, you do know how to generate possibilities."
7. "When working out how to get somehwere you might know all the roads/buses/trains, just not the best route to get you to your destination quickly."
8. "So, although there is no human-like robot in sight, many ideas and concepts from AI are permeating modern computer science and current technology."
9. "...while the best current speech understanding systems are based on statistical methods rather than a deep understanding of human language."
10. "Should we expect to meet Commander Data in future? This is more a philosophical issue than an AI one, but we will briefly look at what has been said on the subject."
