The Importance of Health Equity Education

Although the Association of American Medical Colleges recommends that medical educators expose students to health disparities content, there is a lack of standardization in formatting, delivery, and content. Because health disparities do not fit into the established medical curricula, there is concern that education on health inequity is undervalued or considered less important. Research estimates that up to 50% of an individual’s health is a result of socioeconomic and environmental factors. Generational or downstream impacts can lead to unnecessary harm. As facilitators of the medical process, factors that can enhance health delivery can be achieved in part by fostering better discussions and easing the discomfort associated with addressing challenging subjects.
